Our Future

I so often wonder,
What’s the point of being good?

With a universe so uncaring,
It’s sometimes hard for me to understand
Why we even bother trying.

Everything is crumbling.
Where there was hope,
I now see despair.

Student debt piles up.
People are turning on each other.
Fear mongering politicians have the podium.

Everyone is creating their own truths.
If you don’t meet their eye,
You are nothing but a lie.

Lies.
Lies.
Nothing but lies.

It’s all about the money.

Guns,
War,
And power.

Nobody cares about the future.
The youth are being mocked
And screwed over.

It’s funny,
How we claim to want to make brighter days
For their sake.

But it is they
Who must suffer from our mistakes.

Hate fuels politics.
We say we’re united,
When really we’re divided.

Can we recover from this?
Is there any use in trying?

I don’t know.
Even though damage has been done,
It would seem cruel to turn our backs now.

Yes,
We’ve been dealt a bad hand.
But we can’t repeat this pattern.

If it’s the future we care about,
Then it’s in the present that we must change.

No more greed.
No more corruption.
No more hate.

What we do now,
Will determine our fate.
